Domitian — Autocracy, Administration and Assassination

Domitian succeeded his brother Titus in AD 81 and strengthened frontier defenses, reorganized finances and closely supervised provincial government. His court increasingly emphasized the emperor’s personal authority.

Relations with members of the Senate deteriorated, and a palace conspiracy killed Domitian in AD 96. The Senate condemned his memory, while the army retained a more favorable view of the emperor.

What This Coin Tells Us

The denarius was the empire’s principal silver denomination and one of the most effective carriers of imperial portraiture. Domitian maintained careful standards in the silver coinage during much of his reign.

His issues celebrated military victories, religious devotion and the Flavian dynasty. They offer a durable official record against which the hostile literary tradition can be compared.
