Diocletian — Recovery, Reorganization and the Tetrarchy

Diocletian came to power after decades of rapid imperial turnover and reorganized rule through the Tetrarchy, assigning authority to two Augusti and two Caesars. The system aimed to improve frontier command and provide orderly succession.

His government also reformed taxation, administration and coinage and launched the last major imperial persecution of Christians. Diocletian abdicated voluntarily in AD 305, an extraordinary act for a Roman emperor.

What This Coin Tells Us

The nummus was introduced in Diocletian’s monetary reform as a substantial bronze coin with a thin silvered surface. It supplied a more regular large denomination after the currency disruption of the third century.

Tetrarchic coins emphasized collective strength and disciplined government rather than highly individualized portraiture. They are direct evidence for Diocletian’s effort to restore order.
