Theodosius I — Recovery, Civil War and Religious Change
Gratian appointed Theodosius as eastern emperor after the Roman defeat at Adrianople. He rebuilt military strength and reached a settlement that incorporated Gothic groups within the empire.
Theodosius defeated the western claimants Magnus Maximus and Eugenius, briefly reuniting imperial rule. He promoted Nicene Christianity and divided authority between his sons Arcadius and Honorius at his death in AD 395.
What This Coin Tells Us
The nummus was a basic bronze denomination of the late Roman economy. Its small module carried imperial portraits and concise messages across a vast and increasingly regionalized monetary system.
Theodosius’ bronze coinage reflects both military legitimacy and the Christian imperial order. These issues come from the generation immediately before permanent eastern and western courts emerged.
