Arcadius — Court Government in the Eastern Empire

Theodosius I made Arcadius Augustus while still a child and left him the eastern empire in AD 395. Powerful ministers, generals and members of the imperial family dominated much of the court’s decision-making.

The reign faced Gothic military pressure and rivalry with the western court, yet Constantinople’s government remained intact. Arcadius died in AD 408 and was succeeded by his young son Theodosius II.

What This Coin Tells Us

Late Roman bronze coins carried imperial portraits and compact official messages through everyday commerce. AE numbers used today describe approximate size rather than ancient denominations.

Arcadius’ long coinage marks the consolidation of a durable eastern imperial court. The pieces document continuity during the political separation of East and West.
