Historical Context

Severus II rose through the Tetrarchic system, becoming Caesar in AD 305 and Augustus in AD 306 under Galerius. His elevation came during the unstable transition after Diocletian’s retirement.

When Maxentius seized Rome, Severus marched into Italy, but troops who had served under Maxentius’s father defected. Severus surrendered and was later executed in AD 307, leaving a brief but important coinage of the Tetrarchic civil wars.
