Historical Context
Trebonianus Gallus became emperor in AD 251 after Decius and Herennius Etruscus died fighting the Goths. He ruled jointly with his son Volusian during plague, invasion and political instability.
When Aemilian won a rapid victory over the Goths and was proclaimed emperor, Gallus marched to meet him. His own troops killed Gallus and Volusian in AD 253 before the rival armies fought.
