Historical Context

Theodosius I became eastern emperor in AD 379 after the Roman defeat at Adrianople. He rebuilt imperial forces and reached a settlement that allowed Gothic groups to live within the empire under treaty obligations.

He supported Nicene Christianity and was the last emperor to rule both eastern and western courts. After his death in AD 395, authority passed to his sons Arcadius and Honorius.
