Historical Context
Severus Alexander became emperor in AD 222 after the fall of Elagabalus. Because he was young, his mother Julia Mamaea and a council of advisers exercised substantial influence over the government.
His reign faced renewed Sasanian pressure in the east and Germanic threats on the Rhine. Soldiers killed Severus and his mother in AD 235, an event often used to mark the beginning of the third-century crisis.
