Historical Context
Postumus founded the Romano-Gallic Empire in AD 260 after Roman authority weakened along the Rhine. He created a functioning regional government for Gaul, Britain and, for a time, parts of Spain.
Postumus successfully defended the Rhine frontier but was killed by his own soldiers in AD 269 after refusing to allow them to plunder Mainz. His coinage is central to understanding the Gallic Empire.
