Historical Context

Salonina was the wife of Gallienus and held the title Augusta through much of his long reign. Her coinage presented the imperial household as a source of continuity during the severe disruptions of the third-century crisis.

She appeared on numerous issues associated with traditional Roman virtues and protective deities. Although ancient sources reveal little about her independent role, her coins are important evidence for Severan-style dynastic messaging under Gallienus.

What This Coin Tells Us

As an archaeological and historical object, this coin offers a tangible connection to the people, institutions and economic life of its period. Individual examples naturally vary in strike, centering, wear, patina and surviving detail.
