Historical Context

Aelia Flacilla was the first wife of Theodosius I and the mother of Arcadius and Honorius. As Augusta, she represented dynastic legitimacy and Christian imperial virtue at the eastern court.

Contemporary Christian writers praised her charity and devotion to Nicene Christianity. Her death in the 380s was followed by public commemoration, and her coinage is an important record of late Roman empresses.
