Historical Context

Honorius became western emperor in AD 393 and ruled after the death of his father Theodosius I. Much military authority during his reign was exercised by powerful generals, especially Stilicho.

The western empire faced repeated invasions and internal revolts, and Rome was sacked by the Visigoths in AD 410. Honorius remained emperor until AD 423 despite the continuing erosion of western control.
