Historical Context

Gratian became western emperor while still young and later ruled alongside his half-brother Valentinian II. His government faced military pressure along the frontiers and growing rivalry among senior commanders.

He strongly favored Nicene Christianity and reduced traditional imperial support for several pagan institutions. In AD 383, the usurper Magnus Maximus gained military backing, and Gratian was captured and killed.
