Historical Context

Valentinian II became western emperor as a child in AD 375. Real power often rested with senior officials, generals and his mother Justina while the western court confronted religious and military rivalry.

He later came under the influence of the powerful general Arbogast. Valentinian died at Vienne in AD 392 under disputed circumstances, and the crisis contributed to another civil war.
