Historical Context
Constans was a son of Constantine the Great and received part of the empire after his father’s death in AD 337. He eventually controlled most of the western provinces after conflict with his brother Constantine II.
His reign combined frontier campaigning with firm support for Nicene Christianity. A revolt led by Magnentius in AD 350 destroyed his support, and Constans was overtaken and killed while fleeing.
